How do You Know What’s true?
We live in an age where we all have our own ways of sourcing information.
This depends on who we choose to trust.
There is misinformation and disinformation, conspiracy theories and a deliberate drive to mistrust Science method ,, practice, research, education and their possible agendas and the same for politics, journalists, health and mental health etc.
And there are those who work with observable and verified facts. I know some of you will be thinking, how do we know what you call ‘verified’ and ‘fact’ are real?
Facts are things that are indisputable. Today is Thursday in Australia, it is 7 15 am, the sky is blue, I am looking at a green forest as I write this. Facts.
These are ok facts because there is no agenda or reason to doubt them.
Facts that are spun with an agenda are no longer purely facts. They have been twisted to fit an intention, other than providing information. Create an alternative reality to confuse. Confused people are easy to infuse with fear and mistrust and control.
Disinformation is used by those who gain from undermining our ability to know what’s real, are winning in the present.
They are gaining power over our social and individual consciousness, so they can introduce their version of reality for their own agendas.
The algorithms are taking us down narrower and more diverse rabbit holes of circular and often crazy thinking. In muddying what’s real and what’s not, for many. With crazy illogical reasoning of what people feel or fear, with often highly distorted and inaccurate information.
Why? To fulfil financial or power agendas.
For example to keep us hooked on fossil fuels.
There is a lot to lose if we convert to renewables for the fossil fuel industry and shareholders.
What happens if we start to notice the changes that are occurring all over the world, in real time. Floods, fires, droughts. Yes they have always happened, but not at this rate. Listen to the independent scientists about climate change.
What would happen if we were free to each made our own decisions on what’s real?
We are becoming more diverse and anchored about our understand of what we think we know. Disconnected from each other and often angry that others don’t see or understand the way we do.
It’s true that not all scientists adhere to the high standards set for research and practice, that journalism has been largely taken over by those with strong political agendas, that there are different levels and approaches of healthcare, traditional and alternative and the same for mental health and politics that come with many opposing and often hidden alliances and agendas.
But there still those who fiercely maintain independence and are doing the best they can in an increasingly corrupt world, who are lost in this storm of lies in the form of “fake news”, lies and mistruths. Designed to fade out truths that are inconvenient for the powers that be.
This is taking hold because we are allowing ourselves to be invaded by algorithms.
Notice the following:
1 How much time do you spend each day on
Scrolling your phone?
Social media?
2 Are you addicted to it?
How do you know?
Try This
Switch off your device and notice how you feel after 30 minutes, 1 or 2 hours.
Notice any craving or desire to switch on again.
Social media is designed by algorithms to be addictive. You brain becomes wired to your devices through hours of interaction, so in leaving them behind, there is often discomfort and craving.
3 Notice how your interaction with your favourite social media makes you feel during or after using it
Do you feel:
Good about yourself, relaxed, inspired, happy?
or
Insecure, disturbed, confused, sad or angry?
The way you feel is driven by the underlying beliefs connected to your feelings.
- Healthy beliefs create positive feelings and the ability to be flexible.
- Unhealthy beliefs create negative feelings and become entrenched and stuck.
Your beliefs come from your family and/or your life learnings and experiences. Added to this now is social media that has ways of infiltrating your psyche that are very powerful.
What we often forget, is that our mind is ours. It’s up to us to decide where we focus it.
This may have positive or negative effects on our beliefs, feelings and choices.
This is because your beliefs and feelings direct your life and choices and how you perceive your experiences.
Your Choices
If your social media or leisure choices make you feel positive, they are healthy and a good basis for choices in your life.
If they result in negative feelings and choices they are detrimental to your life and health.
You have a choice.
How this issue of what is true affects me.
In my world I am an innovator of psychotherapies. I have developed two highly effective modalities for a wide range of relational, mental health and trauma recovery. Requiring only a few sessions for most. (Not suitable for schizophrenia, bipolar or other serious mental health issues).
I am regularly asked how I can make such claims when other modalities require months or even years for similar complex issues of depression or PTSD management.
Once people experience these approaches, they let me know they found it hard to believe initially, but are really pleased with the result in 1-3 sessions only.
I do understand their scepticism as so many make claims they cannot fulfil. So how are the public to know the difference?
I would love to:
- See a space developed for proven or reliable facts, theories, products and processes, so the public could look them up with more confidence.
- Turn the tide back to ethics and reliable standards and where the public have taken back their personal power to make choices, by looking beyond their favoured streams of information for the seams of truth underlying them and have the means to unveil who is spreading mistruths and conspiracy theories and why.
I’ve always been idealistic.
