Is it wise in personal development to delve into past lives for present day solutions?
Past lives, karma and your present life.
There is an ancient Eastern belief that is coming into present day consciousness for many, that we are in a cycle of reincarnation. There is an understanding that we come back each time to complete unfinished business and also to live out the karma that we’ve set up and experience ourselves in many different ways, through desires. Through what we do now we create more karma, both positive and negative and so the cycle continues. Karma means action.
As a Vedic astrologer I see people who are spiritual seekers involved in personal development who want to understand themselves more deeply and become clearer about their life purpose. They want to understand their challenges and gifts and also how to make the most of their lives.
In dealing with karmic patterns on a daily basis through such consultations, I have developed an understanding of past lives and karma and how to work with it in effective ways. My involvement in Vedic astrology led me into searching for ways to understand the subtleties of karma (action) and what is necessary to resolve the more challenging trends. As a Vedic astrologer I could have gone into Vedic remedial remedies, but chose not to for many reasons. Traditional Vedic remedies include the use of puja’s (spiritual ceremonies), wearing particular gemstones or the application of a wide range of acts of charity and compassion, in an attempt to alleviate difficult karmic patterns. Although these can be potent in making a difference, they can also be used in a way that makes no difference at all, unless mindset is also changed through the process. In the same way that a priest may recommend 12 Hail Marys’ to resolve sins, how can that make any difference at all, unless it is truly heartfelt and results in a change of heart and mindset? Often such remedies are performed by people who are superstitious and in fear of a dangerous, judging God, rather through a deep ethical realization of what they have done along with a wish to change their attitude permanently and deeply. True personal development requires a positive intentions and willingness to take full responsibility for actions
Such Vedic remedial measures were formulated at a time about 5000 BC when knowledge of the mind and psychology were in their elementary periods of development. It was the best that could be done at that time. We now have a great deal of therapeutic, psychological knowledge of how to change mindset, if the person concerned is committed to positive change with the assistance of an effective facilitator.
To this end I became a psychotherapist, hypnotherapist and Family Constellations facilitator and personal development trainer.
As a psychotherapist and hypnotherapist I help people through personal development to change mindset in terms of their conscious and unconscious mind.
As a Family Constellations practitioner, I help people to find their place in their family system and resolve ancestral emotional and mental entanglements in a respectful way for more clarity, freedom and presence in the NOW.
The mind is mostly unconscious. Only about 20% is conscious. So in trying to change deeply held patterns or feelings it is necessary to go into the unconscious mind. Hypnotherapy is a great way to do this with a competent registered hypnotherapist. See the Australian Hypnotherapy Association for practitioners.
Human ancestry goes back into the distant past. It has been show that we carry emotional and mental patterns and trauma from those who have gone before us through the work of Systemic Family Constellations. Often if a pattern cannot be resolved in individual therapeutic processes it is because it is a systemic one and needs to be dealt with at that level. Systemic means tapping into ancestral lineage and the patterns that we carry from them.
In dealing with the mind and systemic issues we are dealing with what we carry from our ancestors, past lives and from our own life experiences and changing our mindset and karma.
In looking at an astrology chart I am looking at the cosmic imprint of what each person is here to experience. This starts with the mindset or psychology that is shown by the cosmic arrangement of planets in the sky over the place and time of birth. This is represented by the chart and shows the personality, particular nuances, subtleties and focus for the person and how they see and experience themselves and their world. The cosmic map, the chart shows the psychology and mindset from which the life and choices flow. It remains a very useful tool to understand yourself and your purpose.
I began to wander whether such a mindset could be changed.
I pondered the following:
- From an astrology perspective, is it possible to change our karma?
- From a therapeutic perspective is it possible to change our psychology or mind set?
- Does our ancestral lineage have anything to do karma and past lives?
Through my experience in the field of personal development for the past two decades, my answer to each of these question is Yes, for the most part.
I believe we are in a cycle of reincarnation. My life and my work with clients have convinced me of this. Often in working with a client in hypnotherapy, during the process of regression to the start of their issue, the person spontaneously goes to the beginning point within this life and occasionally to a past life or previous generation. If this is the root of the present day problem an understanding of this will help in the present. In my experience it is not helpful to revisit it again.
The present life that is also the astrology chart for this life, is the sum total of karma (actions) to be experienced at this time. This comes from past lives and includes generational influences. This is reflected in your family of origin and the people around you, such as partners, children, career and bosses etc. In other words for over 90% of people it is sufficient to look at what is happening in their life now to deal with past life resolutions in the present. In looking at the relationships that challenge us, we are already looking at a past life issue that was not resolved then and is here now as unfinished business. Waiting for resolution.
What is resolution? Resolving your own feelings and understanding of the situation or relationship. Creating clear boundaries of what is yours or theirs and taking full responsibility for your part only and finally accepting what can’t be changed. This is personal development.
In going into the recesses of the mind, mindset or family system it is possible to make all the changes and release necessary and find the resolutions required to unlock, resolve, connect to love and hence go into a better place of peace and respect for a healthier sense of self.
There are many people of all kinds with or without professional training in this area that are attempting to delve into past lives either for curiosity, or to resolve a present life issue. This may be relevant for some and if it is, will be resolved quickly. A few sessions normally.
While delving into past lives may be exciting for some, it can also unleash a lot of fear and anxiety and be irrelevant to the reality of what is required to be faced now, in real and grounded terms. Real issues of self-esteem, depression and anxiety, relationship patterns, choices and taking responsibility for ourselves can be dealt with relatively easily and quickly for the most part through hypnotherapy and Family constellations, hence resolving karmic patterns and changing mindset. With personal development that can change mindset you can change what you create in the now and hence the karma you are setting down now.
We are unique beings on a spiritual journey, here on planet earth. Everything in your life is here for a purpose. What is necessary for each of us to deal with in this life is evident in what we find ourselves in now. It is no accident that we are born to these parents or have these children or partners or experience particular events. It is all here now to be faced and dealt with and this can happen relatively quickly for most in the now with safe current knowledge and practice.

Past Lives for Present day solutions.
Is it wise to delve into past lives for present day solutions?
PR 10 December 2015
Yildiz Sethi a personal development expert, (systemic Family Constellation psychotherapist and Vedic astrologer), has noticed that many people are interested in delving into past lives but questions whether it is wise or necessary in order to find present day solutions to what we face now?”
“There is an ancient Eastern belief that is coming into present day consciousness for many, that we are in a cycle of reincarnation.”
“There is an understanding that we come back each time to complete unfinished business and also to live out the karma that we’ve set up and experience ourselves in many different ways. Through what we do now we create more karma, both positive and negative and so the cycle continues, as karma is action.”
In considering what are the best ways to deal with the challenges we face she raises the following questions;
- “From a Vedic astrology perspective, is it possible to change our karma?
- From a therapeutic perspective is it possible to change our psychology or mind set?
- Does our ancestral lineage have anything to do karma and past lives?”
She finds through her personal development work that,
- “Mind set needs to change in order to ease or change the challenges.”
- All that we need to deal with is right here and now and is a culmination of past life experiences for most people.
- There are now effective psychotherapeutic ways of making those changes relatively quickly through an effective registered clinical hypnotherapist (Australian Hypnotherapy Association) or through Systemic Family Constellations.”
